16 Irish Golfers Set for Final Qualifying at 152nd Open Championship

Two-time Cork All-Star Colman Corrigan believes the Cork footballers have drawn the best possible match-up for the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final, urging them to take full advantage of this opportunity against Louth. The R&A has announced the names of the 288 players competing in the Final Qualifying for the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, with 16 Irish golfers among them.

After the Regional Qualifier at County Louth Golf Club, Jack Madden, Gerard Dunne, Liam Grehan, Jake Whelan, Niall Kearney, and Jack Hume are all advancing. Joining them are 2023 Walker Cup players Alex Maguire, Liam Nolan, and Matthew McClean, who qualified due to their amateur performances.

Completing the Irish lineup are Gary Hurley, Max Kennedy, Conor Purcell, Colm Moriarty, Graeme McDowell, Dermot McElroy, and Tom McKibbin.

McKibbin aims to secure a spot directly through his performance at this week’s Italian Open. He, along with Whelan, Kennedy, Purcell, Nolan, McClean, and McElroy, will compete at Dundonald Links in Scotland. West Lancashire Golf Club in Liverpool will host Hurley, Maguire, Dunne, and Grehan, while Hume and 2010 U.S. Open Champion McDowell will play at Royal Cinque Ports on England’s southeast coast.

Madden, who topped the Regional Qualifier at County Louth, will compete at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club on the Bristol Channel, along with Kearney and Moriarty.

The exact number of qualifiers from each of the four venues will be announced later. The Final Qualifying event, spanning 36 holes, takes place on Tuesday, July 2.

Notable names in the field include Sergio Garcia at West Lancashire, Justin Rose at Burnham and Berrow, and Alex Noren at Royal Cinque Ports.
