2024 Dundalk FC Golf Classic Shines at Dundalk Golf Club
The 2024 Dundalk FC Golf Classic, held at Dundalk Golf Club last Thursday, was a resounding success, combining fun, excellent weather, and top-notch entertainment.
This sold-out event attracted 40 teams and is projected to raise a significant five-figure sum for the academy sides at Oriel Park.
A highlight of the day was the camaraderie and goodwill fostered among participants. The majority of the first-team squad attended, mingling with supporters, and owner Brian Ainscough was present, engaging with everyone at the bustling ninth green. This area, energized by Dole Ireland’s smoothie bar, Denis Molloy’s expertly grilled burgers, and Jane McDermott’s mini-club shop, became a central hub of activity.
Manager Jon Daly joined the fun, playing alongside Cameron Elliott, Zak Johnson, and academy coach Cian Mulligan. Legends like 1988 and 1991 league-winning manager Turlough O’Connor, Alan O’Neill, and former director Jack Murphy also graced the event, with Murphy’s Jack Murphy Jewellers sponsoring the nearest to the pin prizes.
Ainscough: An Amazing Day
Club owner Brian Ainscough praised the event, describing it as “an amazing day” and commending the organizing committee: Seamus Bailey, PJ Dooley, Tony McBride, Cormac Gartlan, James Rogers, David Caldwell, Stephen Neary, club CEO Peter Halpin, and Commercial Manager Nita Whelan.
“It was fantastic,” Ainscough remarked. “The seamless organization was impressive, thanks to Peter, Nita, and all the volunteers. Their dedication made the day perfect.”
Ainscough expressed hopes for making the golf classic an annual event, noting the importance of such events for fostering community and support for the club. He also highlighted a similar successful event in Kerry and envisioned a larger gathering later in the year to celebrate the club’s achievements.
Manager Jon Daly Enjoys the Day
Manager Jon Daly enjoyed the day, despite admitting his golf skills were rusty. “Playing with Zak, Cami, and an academy coach was great. It was a fantastic opportunity to relax and connect with supporters,” Daly said.
PJ Dooley Hails Event as a Success
Organizing committee member PJ Dooley praised the event, calling it “absolutely fabulous.” He highlighted the excellent collaboration between Dundalk FC and Dundalk Golf Club, the support from Denis Molloy and Dole Ireland, and the splendid weather.
Reviving Tradition
After a 15-year hiatus, the return of the golf classic was celebrated by past winner Gerry Goodman, who participated with his family. Goodman emphasized the importance of the event for supporting youth development at the club.
Winning Team
An all-female team comprising Mary Dooley, Oonagh Quinn, Mary McDonnell, and Niamh Maguire triumphed with 107 points. Mary Dooley praised her teammate Niamh Maguire’s stellar putting skills, which were pivotal to their victory.
