€607,000 Funding Boost for Dunleer’s Public Realm Transformation

A major investment of over €600,000 has been announced for the “Dunleer – Energising the Community” public realm project, marking a significant step forward in the revitalisation of the mid-Louth town.

Louth County Council has welcomed the allocation of €607,790 under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF), which will support key enhancement works on Main Street and the revitalisation of the train station area — two transformative elements at the heart of the Dunleer Town Centre First Plan.

The funding was announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, as part of a €20.5 million national package supporting 30 landmark regeneration projects in rural communities across Ireland.

Enhancing Dunleer’s Identity and Accessibility

The Dunleer project aims to strengthen the town’s identity, improve accessibility, and create a more vibrant, welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. The public realm improvements will enhance pedestrian and cycling links, support sustainable transport, and improve the visual appeal of the town centre.

The revitalisation of the train station area is seen as a key part of reconnecting Dunleer with its rail heritage and encouraging future opportunities for transport and tourism development. Meanwhile, enhancements on Main Street will focus on public spaces, walkability, and supporting local enterprise.

A Collaboration Between Community and Council

Developed in close partnership with the Dunleer Town Team, local businesses, and residents, the initiative reflects a strong spirit of local collaboration and a shared vision for Dunleer’s future.

It also aligns with national policy under Project Ireland 2040 and the Town Centre First framework, which promotes sustainable, people-focused development in rural towns.

The RRDF investment will fund the design, planning, and technical phases, paving the way for future implementation funding to bring the plans to life on the ground.

Strong Endorsement from Local and National Leaders

Speaking about the announcement, Minister Dara Calleary TD said:

“I am delighted to announce the successful projects selected from applications to the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund. This €1 billion fund under Project Ireland 2040 is ensuring that rural Ireland continues to grow and prosper, driving balanced regional growth that benefits all communities.”

Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, welcomed the news as a “major vote of confidence in Dunleer and its people.”

“The Town Centre First Plan has laid out a clear and ambitious roadmap for revitalisation, and this announcement marks a significant step forward in delivering that vision,” he said.

David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, added:

“We are committed to ensuring that Dunleer continues to thrive as a vibrant and accessible town. This investment will help realise key elements of the Town Centre First Plan and showcases the power of collaboration between local communities and government.”

A Vision for Dunleer’s Future

Once complete, “Dunleer – Energising the Community” will deliver a more attractive, accessible, and sustainable town centre, supporting local enterprise, encouraging green travel, and enhancing the overall quality of life for all who live, work, and visit the area.
