Ardee Councillor Backs Review, Open to Pay‑Parking to Resolve Chaos

Ardee Councillor Says “I Wouldn’t Be Against Pay Parking”
At the July meeting of Ardee Municipal District, Independent Cllr Jim Tenanty called for an urgent review of parking in Ardee—suggesting that introducing pay‑parking might be one solution to the growing parking crisis. With the bypass delayed and streets increasingly congested by all‑day parked cars, Tenanty described the situation as “untenable.”
He voiced concerns that constant parking in residential roads is blocking access for carers and emergency services visiting elderly residents. Tenanty emphasized that shop and business staff are frequently occupying prime spaces all day on main streets.
“All day parking in residential areas is now very common, and carers cannot access houses … because of the lack of parking they face,” he said.
His motion to review parking bylaws gained support from Cllr Rachel Kerley, who argued for designated commuter parking to support bus commuters heading to Dublin, and Cllr John Sheridan, who advocated for creating a ‘park‑and‑share’ system. Cllr Pearse McGeough also highlighted the need for an overarching traffic management plan.
Pay‑Parking Divides Council
Despite backing for a review, pay‑parking sparked controversy. Cathaoirleach Cllr Dolores Minogue made it clear she opposes the concept:
“We are not talking about re‑introducing pay parking, I would not support that.”
Tenanty, however, maintains his proposal solely seeks a review of all available options, including enforcement, residential permits, and pay‑parking. He noted that some private car parks have begun enforcing charges to curb long‑term misuse.
“I wouldn’t be against pay parking … but the motion states only that a review of parking bylaws be carried out.”
Minogue countered that the parking woes shouldn’t punish the majority due to objections about the bypass—insisting a bypass delay should not translate into worsening daily life for Ardee’s residents.
What Happens Now
- Council Review: The motion calls for a comprehensive review of Ardee’s parking bylaws—covering residential, commuter, and enforcement schemes.
- Stakeholder Input: Residents, businesses, carers, and commuters are expected to be consulted.
- Potential Solutions: Could include residential parking permits, commuter park‑and‑share lanes, stricter enforcement, and revisiting paid parking.
- Timeline: Findings and recommendations are expected ahead of the next Municipal District meeting sought later this summer.
As Ardee contends with ongoing bypass delays, effective parking and traffic management are essential. The council’s upcoming review may pave the way for long‑term solutions that address commuter demand, resident access, and local business needs—be it through enforcement, permits, or potentially pay‑parking.olonged period of economic strain.signaling exciting times ahead for Louth football.
