Senator Alison Comyn Condemns Drogheda Arson Attack and Urges Public to Help Gardaí

Senator Alison Comyn has spoken out following the shocking arson attack in Drogheda on Halloween night, condemning what she described as a “vile and deliberate act of violence” and calling on anyone with information to come forward immediately.

Shortly after 8:15 p.m. on George’s Street, Drogheda, a fire was deliberately set inside a residential building that housed 28 people, including men, women, children, and babies. Gardaí believe the blaze was started intentionally, with CCTV footage suggesting the suspect used an accelerant to ignite the flames.

“This was an act of pure evil,” Senator Comyn said. “To calmly set fire to a staircase, knowing that dozens of people — including children — could die, is beyond comprehension. And when the fire didn’t take the first time, to try again — more determined — shows a frightening level of intent.”

A Town United in Shock and Anger

The Drogheda community has been left reeling by the incident, which could easily have resulted in a tragedy. Miraculously, no one was killed, though several residents required medical attention for smoke inhalation.

Senator Comyn praised the emergency services, hospital staff, and local residents who responded with bravery and compassion on the night of the attack.

“Amid the horror, I still have hope,” she said. “Hope in the Gardaí and firefighters who risked their lives to save others. Hope in the kindness of hospital staff and the hundreds of locals who offered help. This act will not define Drogheda — our courage and compassion will.”

A Call to Action for the Community

Senator Comyn urged anyone who recognises the suspect — described as a man seen on CCTV near the scene — to contact Gardaí immediately.

“Someone knows who this person is,” she said. “Someone recognises his clothes, his behaviour, his hate-filled rhetoric. Please — do the right thing. Do not protect him. Contact the Gardaí. Because anyone capable of this must be taken off our streets.”

Ongoing Garda Investigation

Gardaí have launched a full investigation and are appealing to the public for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect. They are reviewing CCTV footage, conducting door-to-door inquiries, and calling for dashcam footage from drivers who may have been in the area that night.

“This investigation will take time,” Senator Comyn added. “But the people of Drogheda can be sure that justice will be pursued with determination and courage. There is no room for such hatred or violence in our town.”
