Drogheda United’s New Stadium Plans Take Major Leap Forward with Grant Application

Drogheda United are aiming to build a state-of-the-art 4,500-seater stadium with future capacity expansion options. Recently, the club formally submitted a grant application for the Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF), a crucial step in their development efforts.

Drogheda United is among eight League of Ireland clubs vying for a share of the €120 million allocated by the Department of Sport for sports infrastructure development. The combined grant applications from these clubs total €80.6 million. The club is working closely with Louth County Council to establish a comprehensive plan and timeline for the completion of this new stadium in the northeast of the town.

Back in March, Drogheda United secured ownership of their current Weavers Park ground, which has a capacity of 3,500, from the FAI. The proposed new stadium will initially offer 4,500 seats, with plans for future expansions by adding north and south stands.

The new site will be a comprehensive sports hub, featuring two full-size training pitches, ample car parking, fan zones, and green areas, all well-connected by various access roads. Notably, Drogheda United will share a gym in the West Stand with the Tredagh Boxing Academy. This stand will also include changing rooms, offices, retail outlets, and a sports science room.

The West Stand is set to house 2,350 seats and will feature a bar/restaurant on the first floor, alongside hospitality boxes and amenity spaces. The East Stand will accommodate 2,150 supporters and provide storage facilities for maintenance equipment. Fan zones behind each goal will offer food trucks and community facilities, with provisions to build permanent stands at either end in the future.

“This development will be integral to an area which is on the cusp of significant growth whilst also providing a major new amenity to the town of Drogheda,” said the club in a statement. “Drogheda United FC urges the Government to support our plans and we also urge the people of Drogheda to embrace this new venture.”

The club highlighted the historical underinvestment in the town and emphasized the positive impact this development could have: “Our town and city has long suffered from significant underinvestment. This is an opportunity for us all to build a positive future for our football club and the community it serves.”

With the grant application submitted and a solid plan in place, Drogheda United is optimistic about the future and the significant benefits the new stadium will bring to both the club and the broader community.
