Irish tourists are advised to exercise caution when planning their holidays to Lanzarote, as the popular Canary Island has issued an unusual “black alert” for one of its most famous beaches. Playa Blanca, a well-loved destination known for its stunning turquoise waters and golden sands, has been given a black flag by Ecologistas en Accion due to significant environmental issues.

The annual report from the environmental group, which has been tracking Spain’s beach conditions since 2005, highlights Playa Blanca among 48 beaches across the country that have received this serious designation this year. The primary concern listed for Playa Blanca is “sewage discharges,” which has led to the beach’s temporary closure from May 4 for necessary repairs and cleanup efforts.

Ecologistas en Accion has pointed to inadequate sewage treatment facilities and poor oversight of wastewater management as the main culprits behind the pollution affecting Playa Blanca. The group has also criticized the improper disposal of wet wipes and nappies as contributing factors. The report underscores the urgent need for improved waste management practices and enhanced environmental protections to safeguard the region’s coastal areas.

Playa Blanca’s black flag is part of a broader concern highlighted in the report, which includes 48 beaches suffering from various issues such as overdevelopment, chemical and noise pollution, and industrial damage. Notably, 15 of these beaches are impacted by overdevelopment near the coastline, while 16 face challenges with wastewater management, resulting in the presence of pollutants and contaminants in the ocean.

The report also notes environmental concerns related to two hotels constructed in a protected area in Fuerteventura, further stressing the need for stringent environmental regulations and enforcement.

For Irish holidaymakers, Lanzarote has traditionally been a favored destination, along with Tenerife and Gran Canaria. However, travelers are advised to stay informed about the current environmental conditions and potential impacts on their travel plans. It is recommended to check for the latest updates on beach conditions and environmental advisories before making travel arrangements.

Travelers who have already booked trips to Lanzarote or are considering visiting Playa Blanca should remain vigilant and consider alternative beaches or destinations if concerned about the environmental situation. Keeping abreast of local news and updates will help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday experience.
