Residents of Ardee can look forward to a new addition to their town as An Bord Pleanála has given the final go-ahead for the development of a garden centre, café, and children’s activity centre at the former McCabes Garage, The Glebe, Ardee. This decision follows an appeal against Louth County Council’s initial approval of the project earlier this year.

The project, spearheaded by Glebe Botanical Ltd, received planning permission from Louth County Council in January. The development will involve the refurbishment and extension of the existing building on site, transforming it into a vibrant garden centre complete with a café and an engaging children’s activity area. Outdoor display areas and polytunnels are also included in the plan, enhancing the centre’s appeal as a community hub.

Access to the centre will be via the existing entrance on the R171 (Tallanstown Road), while a new dedicated vehicular entrance for staff and service vehicles will be established further north along the R171.

The project faced a setback in February when local resident Ms. Phyllis Kirk lodged a third-party appeal with An Bord Pleanála, challenging the council’s decision. However, An Bord Pleanála has now upheld the original decision, concluding that the development will be a positive reuse of the currently vacant site.

In its ruling, An Bord Pleanála emphasized that the project, subject to specified conditions, will not negatively impact the surrounding area and will be safe for both traffic and pedestrians. They noted that the proposed development is “acceptable in terms of quantum of floor area” and will not “seriously injure the amenities of the adjoining sites.”

The new garden centre is expected to bring a fresh and family-friendly destination to Ardee, contributing to the local economy and providing a new space for both residents and visitors to enjoy. With planning approval now secured, work on the project is anticipated to begin soon.
