Ardee St. Mary’s Among Sports Clubs Eligible for Charger Grants
Ardee News and Sport — In a significant boost for sustainable transport, Ardee St. Mary’s GFC is among more than 220 sports clubs across Ireland automatically eligible to receive a share of €15 million in funding for electric vehicle (EV) charging points. The grants are part of the latest round of funding released by Zero Emissions Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), an initiative aimed at accelerating the nation’s EV infrastructure.
ZEVI Funds for Clubs Nationwide
ZEVI has allocated the funds to install EV chargers at sports clubs from Cork to Coleraine, reflecting the island-wide scope of the scheme. A total of 227 clubs were deemed eligible after 295 initially applied. The Shared Island Sports Club EV Charging Infrastructure Scheme covers a wide array of sports clubs, ranging from GAA and rugby to soccer and athletics, with 179 clubs in the Republic of Ireland and 48 in Northern Ireland benefitting from the grants.
Government Praise for the Scheme
Taoiseach Simon Harris welcomed the development, saying, “I am delighted to see such a strong response to the Shared Island Sports Club EV Charging Scheme. This initiative will enhance access to public charging and provide a sustainable boost for towns and villages across the country.”
Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan highlighted the strategic placement of EV chargers at community hubs like sports clubs, noting, “It makes perfect sense that when people visit their local sports clubs, they can charge their EVs while they’re there. This scheme aligns with our broader national plan to expand Ireland’s EV infrastructure.”
A Positive Step for Sustainability
The Minister for Sport, Catherine Martin, underscored the role of sports clubs in fostering environmental responsibility. “By integrating sustainability principles into their operations, sports clubs can play a major role in achieving our climate goals. This scheme not only enhances club facilities but helps in the fight against climate change.”
With sports clubs at the heart of communities, the grants will help further embed sustainable practices across Ireland while enhancing everyday access to EV charging infrastructure.
