Ardee News and Sport – An Bord Pleanála has upheld Louth County Council’s decision to grant planning permission for transforming the historic Ferdia Arms in Ardee into a temporary accommodation facility. The decision supports Hadleywood Holdings Limited’s February application for the retention and change of use, allowing the building on Castle Street and Barrett’s Lane to provide accommodation for Beneficiaries of Temporary Accommodation ( Ardee Temporary Accommodation ). The Ferdia Arms, a protected structure, will undergo adaptations and internal upgrades as part of this new phase.

The approved project includes retention works, featuring external alterations and various upgrades to the protected structure. Planned renovations will see the addition of guest bedrooms, a reception area, lounge, communal room, dining area, and essential facilities such as sanitary, laundry, and plant rooms. The structure’s facades will also be carefully restored, with some areas replastered and replacement windows installed along Barrett’s Lane, in line with heritage preservation standards.

Despite receiving the green light, the proposal faced objections from the local community. On April 26, Ms. Linda Winstone lodged a third-party appeal with An Bord Pleanála, expressing concerns over the potential economic impact on Ardee and the preservation of the Ferdia Arms’ historic character. However, An Bord Pleanála ruled that, subject to specific conditions, the project aligns with acceptable uses for the building and will not undermine its historical integrity.

An Bord Pleanála noted that the temporary accommodation use would allow the building to serve a needed purpose while retaining its historic significance. Adjustments to the project’s conditions were made to ensure that the character and heritage of the Ferdia Arms are respected in the refurbishment.

The upcoming renovations will involve adding new windows and doorways in the courtyard, as well as carrying out replastering and refurbishment as necessary, marking a significant step in preserving and repurposing one of Ardee’s notable buildings.
