Ardee News & Sport – Ardee to Welcome New Housing Development for Older People and Those with Limited Mobility
By ArdeePost Reporter
ARDEE, CO. LOUTH — A major step toward improved housing accessibility in Mid-Louth has been taken, with Louth County Council granting planning permission for a new residential development specifically designed for older people and individuals with limited mobility in the townland of Boat Trench, Ardee.
The approved project, proposed by BKC Alliance Ltd, will see the construction of 21 purpose-built housing units following the demolition of an existing dwelling on the site. The original planning application, lodged in August 2024, had sought permission for 22 units, but revised plans submitted in March 2025 reduced the total number by one to meet design and regulatory considerations.
A Community-Centered Design
The development is carefully tailored to meet the needs of older residents and those with mobility challenges. It will consist of five blocks of single-storey buildings, including a mix of 18 one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom units.
The site layout has been designed to support independent living with safety, accessibility, and community engagement in mind. Features include:
- A new access road with pedestrian connections to the public road
- Dedicated car parking spaces and covered bicycle storage
- Secure bin storage areas
- Site lighting for added security and ease of movement
- Enhanced boundary treatments to maintain privacy and integrate the homes into the existing neighbourhood
A Green Light with Conditions
Planning permission for the project was formally granted by Louth County Council on 16 May 2025, with approval subject to 22 planning conditions. These conditions typically address factors such as site drainage, building materials, traffic management, environmental protections, and construction timelines.
The granting of permission marks a significant step forward for inclusive housing in the Ardee area, particularly as demand for age-friendly and mobility-conscious housing continues to grow across County Louth.
Meeting a Growing Need in Mid-Louth
With Ireland’s population of over-65s steadily increasing, the provision of age-appropriate housing solutions is becoming an essential focus for local authorities. This development at Boat Trench aligns with Louth County Council’s wider strategy to support independent living for older residents and those with disabilities, ensuring that individuals can age in place with dignity and access necessary amenities.
The site’s location within walking distance of Ardee town adds to its appeal, offering future residents proximity to shops, healthcare facilities, and public services, while reducing the need for car travel.
Next Steps
Now that planning permission has been granted, BKC Alliance Ltd is expected to prepare for the construction phase. Further details regarding construction timelines and contractor appointments are likely to be confirmed in the coming months.
This development not only addresses a critical local housing need, but also sets a progressive standard for how smaller towns like Ardee can integrate inclusive, sustainable housing into their communities.
