Caolan Rafferty Defies Elements to Claim Fifth Dundalk Scratch Cup Title
Ardee News and Sport — In a thrilling display of skill and perseverance, Caolan Rafferty has secured his fifth Dundalk Scratch Cup title, sponsored by One Finance. The 32-year-old golfer used his home course advantage to navigate high winds and lightning-fast greens, finishing four shots clear of the competition with back-to-back one-under 71s.
Rafferty’s remarkable consistency allowed him to hold off Warrenpoint’s Harry McArdle and defending champion Eoin Murphy, with McArdle finishing second at 146 and Murphy third at 148. This victory adds to Rafferty’s stellar 2024 season, following wins in the East of Ireland and Laytown & Bettystown and Ardee Scratch Cups.
Presented with the prestigious Carroll Cup by Dundalk Golf Club President Gerry Campbell and One Finance Managing Director Martin McDonnell, Rafferty’s victory places him among legends like Padraig Harrington and JB Carr, who have also claimed this coveted title.
The challenging course conditions saw McArdle post a second-round 72 with five birdies offset by three bogeys and a double bogey, while Murphy shot the best round of the day with a 70, highlighted by an eagle and six birdies, but marred by six bogeys.
