Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan – 2 May 2025

A large crowd of over 800 people gathered in Carrickmacross on yesterday evening in a peaceful protest against what many described as a growing sense of unease and anti-social behaviour in the town.

The assembly began at Cloughvalley Park around 6:30 PM, before the demonstrators made their way along several main streets, including Farney Street and Main Street, as part of a coordinated march. Gardaí maintained a visible presence throughout the event, with cordons in place to ensure public safety.

Among those addressing the crowd was Independent Councillor Seamus Treanor, who delivered a pointed message about law enforcement and civic responsibility.

“We need our town back and we need a zero tolerance approach towards anti-social behaviour,” Treanor said. “Gardaí need to send out that message loud and clear.”

Councillor Treanor also challenged his colleagues, saying:

“All the other councillors within the area need to step up to the plate.”

Other speakers echoed these sentiments, with one man citing a lack of community Gardaí as a key factor in the growing unrest:

“We need more Gardaí out and about in the community—the way it used to be.”

He added that local politicians should be held accountable:

“If you’re not prepared to do the job you were elected to do, then let someone else take the reins and lead this town in a better direction.”

A local woman told the crowd,

“We are fearful for our generations and for the generations to come,”

while another speaker questioned the absence of elected officials:

“If they are not going to represent us, they should retire.”

Before the march commenced, the crowd paused to hear a rendition of ‘The Foggy Dew’, adding a somber but unifying note to the evening.

The demonstration concluded just after 8:30 PM, with many attendees calling it a powerful and necessary display of community solidarity.
