Louth Volunteer Centre and Louth Public Participation Network (Louth PPN) celebrated the county’s exceptional volunteer leaders at the 2024 Louth Volunteer Leader Awards. Held at Dundalk’s Imperial Hotel on November 5th, the ceremony coincided with International Volunteer Managers Day, shining a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of those who inspire and support local volunteers.

The event brought together nominees and their guests for a celebratory luncheon, with each nominee recognized for their invaluable efforts. The prestigious awards, which included Certificates of Appreciation for all nominees, highlighted two stand-out winners for their leadership in volunteerism: Eileen McCormack and Fiona O’Connell.

Honouring Louth’s Exceptional Leaders

Volunteer Leader of the Year: Eileen McCormack, store manager of Vision Ireland in Ardee, received the top award for her seven years of dedication. Known for her kindness and support, Eileen has helped volunteers develop essential retail skills, empowering them to achieve both personal growth and professional success. On receiving her award, Eileen said, “I’m privileged and honoured. I will continue to encourage and inspire new volunteers.”

Leading Young Volunteers: Fiona O’Connell, writer and director with the Drogheda Pantomime Society, was honoured for her work creating a welcoming, inclusive space for young people in Drogheda. Fiona’s efforts build confidence and foster creativity among her young actors. “It’s all been worth it,” she said, “and I’ll keep going till I die.”

Three additional awards, representing the pillars of the Louth PPN, went to organizations committed to Social Inclusion, Community and Voluntary, and Environmental impact:

Social Inclusion Award: Drogheda & District Support for Older People, accepted by Brendan Boylan.

Community and Voluntary Award: Cooley Community Alert, represented by Councillor Fiona Mhic Chonchille.

Environmental Award: Haggardstown Tidy Towns, with Shane McGuinness receiving the honour.

A Commitment to Volunteerism and Community Impact

Kayleigh Mulligan, Manager of Louth Volunteer Centre, praised the recipients: “Behind every successful event, project, and initiative is a team of unsung heroes who bring people together to meet our community’s needs. Managing volunteers takes empathy, patience, and vision. These exceptional leaders inspire others to give their time, making a lasting impact.”
