Ardee News and Sport – Cllr Pearse McGeough Condemns Attack on Camper Vans at Louth Beauty Spot As ‘Absolute Disgrace’
Sinn Féin Cllr Pearse McGeough has strongly condemned a shocking attack on camper vans in Annagassan, describing the incident as “sheer hooliganism” by individuals “who should know better.”
The attack took place on the evening of Saturday, March 8, around 9 pm, when approximately eight camper vans were parked at the popular scenic site. According to Cllr McGeough, two cars carrying at least four young men drove into the area and began harassing those staying in the campers.
“They were old enough to drive and to know better,” said Cllr McGeough.
The perpetrators reportedly shone their full headlights onto the camper vans before launching fireworks, debris, and eggs at them while screaming abuse in what appeared to be an attempt to intimidate the occupants. When confronted, the attackers quickly turned off their lights and left the scene, likely in an effort to avoid identification.
Cllr McGeough does not believe the culprits were from Annagassan itself but suspects they may be from a nearby area.
“The people of Annagassan are welcoming and quiet,” he stated. “They certainly don’t want the likes of this happening in their village. These yobs are nothing but an absolute disgrace.”
One camper, who contacted Cllr McGeough following the ordeal, expressed his fear and distress, revealing that he and his wife left the site immediately, fearing the attackers would return.
The incident has been reported to Gardaí, and Cllr McGeough is now calling for a more visible Garda presence in the area, particularly at weekends and bank holidays.
“We need to ensure that tourists and visitors to the area feel safe to enjoy the beautiful, peaceful surroundings of Annagassan,” he stressed. “This kind of sheer hooliganism cannot be allowed to continue.”
Local residents and visitors alike have expressed their disappointment over the incident, with many hoping that increased security measures will deter further antisocial behaviour in the area.
