Community Unites in Support of Mother Battling Terminal Cancer

In a powerful display of community spirit, a Co Louth mother diagnosed with terminal cancer has vowed to fight the illness with unwavering determination. Tracey Taaffe, a 44-year-old beauty therapist from Monasterboice, Drogheda, had previously overcome breast cancer in 2021. However, recent scans revealed that the disease had spread to her liver, lungs, and sternum, leading to a life expectancy of just three to five years.

Despite the grim prognosis, Tracey’s resolve to battle the illness remains strong. Her daughter, Lea, describes her mother’s resolve as “steely,” a sentiment echoed by the outpouring of support from family, friends, and anonymous donors. In just 24 hours, a GoFundMe page raised €30,000, and within a week, the total had surged to over €52,000. These funds are designated for Tracey’s medical expenses, additional treatment options, and alleviating the financial strain on her family, including her husband Alan, daughter Lea, and son Rhys.

Lea shared that Tracey is determined to surpass the expected lifespan and make the most of the time she has. “She says ‘we need to get over five years, we’ll try to make the most of what is there,’” Lea explained. “Given the circumstances, I don’t know how she puts a smile on her face every day.”

Tracey’s journey has been fraught with challenges; she previously endured 12 rounds of chemotherapy and 20 rounds of radiation. The recent diagnosis of stage four metastatic breast cancer halted her plans, but she remains resolute. Under the care of oncologist Professor John Crown, Tracey faces a forthcoming operation to remove her ovaries, monthly bone infusions, hormone-blocking injections, and a new targeted therapy.

To support Tracey, a benefit night featuring a sponsored head shave will take place at Daly’s pub in Donore, Co Meath, on August 24th. Lea expressed gratitude for the incredible response to the fundraising efforts, acknowledging the support that underscores the community’s deep appreciation for Tracey.
