DUNDALK IT — A major new partnership between Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) and Maynooth University (MU) has officially launched, marking a significant advancement in regional higher education and research with the establishment of the Regional Graduate Academy (RGA).oney laundering offences.

The initiative, designed to strengthen postgraduate education in Ireland’s northeast, will see PhD students jointly registered with both institutions. While students will conduct their research and receive supervision at Dundalk IT, their doctoral degrees will be formally awarded by Maynooth University. This model is intended to provide regional access to high-quality doctoral education while building academic capacity in Dundalk and surrounding areas.

Six key academic disciplines are included in the initial launch of the structured PhD programme:

A total of 16 PhD students have enrolled in the first cohort of the MU-Dundalk IT RGA, with expectations for that number to grow substantially in the coming years. The programme is bolstered by successful recent funding applications and strong institutional support at both the regional and national levels.

The RGA marks the first tangible milestone following a letter of intent signed in June 2024 between DkIT and MU, which set the groundwork for this new collaborative model. The partnership is not limited to doctoral education; both institutions are actively exploring additional areas of cooperation, including:

  • Joint research and innovation projects
  • Enhanced student experience initiatives
  • Potential Maynooth University accreditation for Level 8 and Level 9 DkIT programmes

“A New Kind of Partnership”

Speaking at the official launch, Maynooth University President, Professor Eeva Leinonen, praised the initiative as a model of 21st-century academic collaboration.

“DkIT is a natural partner for Maynooth University, with complementary strengths and a shared commitment to regional impact and research excellence. Together, we are building a collaborative model of doctoral education that is rooted in place, shaped by purpose, and driven by ambition,” she said.

Dundalk IT President Dr Diarmuid O’Callaghan emphasized the practical impact of the initiative:

“Our first cohort of students are already making their marks on the research landscape. This collaboration is a wonderful opportunity for each institution to showcase its strengths and develop strategically to serve our regions. I have high aspirations for what this partnership can achieve.”

The partnership has also drawn praise from national education leadership. Dr Alan Wall, CEO of the Higher Education Authority (HEA), described the RGA as a “tangible example” of how strategic alliances can boost Ireland’s research ecosystem.

“The MU-DkIT Regional Graduate Academy is an important milestone in the strategic engagement of these higher education institutions,” Dr Wall said. He highlighted the role of the Technological Sector Advancement Fund (TSAF) in supporting the partnership.

Government Backing and National Vision

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, commended the collaboration as a significant stride toward building a more connected, innovative, and inclusive higher education system.

“This partnership is to be commended. It reflects a shared commitment to building research capacity, strengthening ties with enterprise, and supporting the development of local communities,” the Minister said.

He added that the initiative aligns with government goals to expand access to education and enhance Ireland’s reputation as a global hub for research and innovation.

Dundalk IT The Future of Regional Research

With the Regional Graduate Academy now underway, both Dundalk IT and MU see this as just the beginning of a wider strategic alliance. By integrating research, innovation, and academic progression within a shared regional vision, the institutions aim to create long-lasting benefits for students, local industries, and communities throughout northeast Ireland.
