Smyth Scores 1-9 against Louth

Fermanagh ‘s Eimear Smyth delivered a masterclass performance on Sunday at Croke Park, guiding Fermanagh to a memorable 1-11 to 0-12 victory over Louth in the All-Ireland Ladies Junior Football Championship final. Smyth’s incredible tally of 1-9 earned her the Player of the Match accolade and played a pivotal role in Fermanagh’s first junior title since 2020.

Already confirmed as the 2024 ZuCar Golden Boot winner with an astounding 7-39 across all grades of the All-Ireland championship, Smyth continued her stellar form on the biggest stage. Her brilliance was evident from the outset, as she and the industrious Blaithin Bogue established early dominance with unanswered points. Despite Louth’s efforts, led by Kate Flood who finished with 0-8, Fermanagh’s superior performance and clinical finishing proved decisive.

The match got off to a lively start, with Smyth’s early points creating a comfortable lead. In the 10th minute, Smyth showcased her skill by catching a high ball ahead of Louth’s goalkeeper Rebecca Lambe Fagan and finding the back of the net, furthering Fermanagh’s lead. Although Louth managed to respond with Flood’s free and Niamh Rice’s impressive 0-2 contribution, Fermanagh maintained a three-point advantage at the break, 1-5 to 0-5.

The second half saw Louth make a strong push. Aoife Russell reduced the deficit to two points, and goalkeeper Lambe Fagan made two crucial saves from Fermanagh’s Niamh McManus, including one off the post. Despite Fermanagh’s temporary setback with Ciara Clarke’s sin-bin, Smyth and Bogue’s scores ensured Fermanagh stayed in control.

Louth managed to narrow the gap to just one point, thanks to Flood and substitute Mischa Rooney. However, Smyth’s consistency was unwavering as she scored vital points and added a free to her impressive tally. Flood’s eighth point kept Louth in contention, but Smyth responded with crucial scores to seal the victory for Fermanagh.

The final whistle confirmed Fermanagh’s third TG4 All-Ireland Junior Football Championship title and underscored Smyth’s exceptional season. The scoreboard reflected the hard-fought nature of the game, with Fermanagh emerging victorious 1-11 to 0-12.

Despite Louth’s valiant effort and Flood’s impressive contribution, it was Fermanagh’s day, driven by Smyth’s brilliance and the team’s collective effort.
