Armstrong and Treacy Shine with a commendable sixth overall.

A family holiday turned disastrous for Laura Prior and her family from County Down when their caravan was struck by a reckless driver on the M1 motorway.

Laura and her husband John, along with their two young children, ages 7 and 4, were returning from a week-long holiday. After stopping at the Applegreen service station for refreshments, they continued their journey northbound towards Darragh Cross.

Between Junctions 16 and 17, a car driving erratically rear-ended their caravan, forcing their vehicle into the safety railings and ultimately coming to a stop across both lanes of the busy motorway. The caravan, which the family had only purchased in April, was heavily damaged, scattering debris across the road. The offending vehicle fled the scene and remains unidentified.

An eyewitness, a lorry driver present at the time, reported seeing the suspect vehicle switching lanes erratically before the crash.

Laura has since posted pictures of the incident on Facebook, seeking information that could lead to identifying the fleeing car. Her post has been shared over 1,300 times. The family continues to appeal for anyone with dash cam footage or who was in the area around 2:25 pm on Saturday to come forward.

Following the incident, the family was escorted by Gardaí to the Carrickdale Hotel, where relatives met them to continue their journey home. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the family remains shaken by the ordeal. Both their car and caravan, along with many personal belongings, have yet to be recovered. Enquiries by An Garda Síochana are ongoing.
