Fianna Fáil has added another high-profile media figure to its ranks for the upcoming General Election, selecting former UTV, BBC, and Sky newsreader Alison Comyn as its candidate in County Louth. The 54-year-old Drogheda journalist will follow in the footsteps of Grainne Seoige as the party’s latest celebrity candidate.

Comyn, who currently works as a journalist with local papers, the Drogheda Independent and The Argus, will be contesting in the five-seat Louth constituency, where Fianna Fáil currently has no sitting TD. The decision to run Comyn comes as two of the constituency’s incumbents, Sinn Féin’s Imelda Munster and long-serving TD Fergus O’Dowd, have announced they will not be seeking re-election.

Comyn, a well-known figure in Drogheda, was reportedly approached by senior Fianna Fáil figures a few weeks ago to run for the Dáil, with her candidacy being officially announced yesterday.

Speaking on her decision to enter politics, Comyn said, “I was born, raised, and educated in Drogheda, and as a local journalist for over 20 years, I know the issues that affect our daily lives here, and I am deeply connected to the heartbeat of our town and region. I know the stories, struggles, and successes that shape our community because I live in the region and experience them myself. I am a true Drogheda doll to the core.”

Comyn also acknowledged the challenges faced by the Drogheda area in recent years but expressed optimism for the future. “The Drogheda area has faced serious challenges in recent years—and we are not out of the woods yet—but I honestly believe it can be a thriving, vibrant community where everyone can flourish.”

Tánaiste and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin welcomed Comyn’s candidacy, stating, “Alison is an excellent addition to our Fianna Fáil ticket in Louth. She is a very accomplished candidate who will bring a wealth of experience to the campaign.”

Comyn’s entry into the race adds an intriguing dynamic to what is shaping up to be a closely watched contest in Louth, as voters will soon decide who will represent them in the next Dáil.
