Ireland’s Lara Gillespie concluded her campaign in the women’s track cycling omnium with a commendable 10th place finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In a fiercely competitive field, Gillespie’s performance was a testament to her resilience and burgeoning talent, as she concluded with 99 points, while the gold medal went to USA’s Jennifer Valente.

Gillespie, hailing from Enniskerry, was in the thick of the action throughout the event, which consisted of four grueling races: the scratch race, tempo race, elimination race, and points race. Despite some setbacks, her determination was evident, particularly in the tempo race where she showcased her strength by being the only rider to lap the entire field.

“I was hoping for more, of course. But I gave everything I could. I’m proud of my race because I raced quite gutsily and bravely,” Gillespie reflected after the event. Her sentiment was echoed by Martyn Irvine, former Olympic cyclist and current coach, who commented, “She was right in with a shout… I think ultimately her legs got her in the end.”

The omnium is a test of versatility and endurance, and Gillespie’s performance highlighted both her strengths and areas for future growth. She entered the final points race in a promising fifth place but was unable to maintain her position as the competition intensified. Her efforts in the elimination race were noteworthy, showing she is more than capable in high-pressure situations.

The final standings saw Valente topping the leaderboard with 144 points, followed by Poland’s Daria Pikulik with silver (131 points) and New Zealand’s Ally Wollaston with bronze (125 points). Despite falling from her mid-race position, Gillespie’s 10th place is a solid foundation for her future in the sport.

“The scratch was not a good race. I got boxed in. I love the tempo race. I was happy with that,” Gillespie added, reflecting on the ups and downs of her performance. Her optimism about future prospects is clear, stating, “I believe I can get a medal one day. I’m still learning, I’m still progressing.”

As Ireland’s cycling star continues to develop her skills and experience, her dedication and spirit promise exciting possibilities ahead. With the Paris Games now behind her, the future looks bright for Lara Gillespie as she sets her sights on even greater achievements.
