Hilton Foods Plans Drogheda Expansion to Create 60 New Jobs

Hospital Hilton Foods, the London-listed meat-processing giant, has announced plans to expand its facility in Drogheda, potentially adding 60 jobs to its current 280-strong workforce in Ireland.

The company has submitted a planning application to Louth County Council, emphasizing the “urgent need for this expansion” due to increased orders and resulting pressures on the existing facility.

According to the planning documents, timely approval of the application will allow Hilton Foods to create additional storage capacity in time for the Christmas rush in 2024, with new production capacity expected to come online in 2025.

“Hilton Foods’ presence in Drogheda has significantly impacted the local economy, providing jobs and supporting local suppliers,” the company stated. “Our commitment to high standards in food processing and packaging has set a benchmark in the industry, contributing to the overall quality and safety of meat products available.”

This potential expansion follows a challenging period for Hilton Foods in Drogheda. Two years ago, the company announced a 25% reduction in its workforce at the plant, cutting 77 jobs. However, recent reports, including one from the Sunday Independent in April, indicated that Hilton Foods is now planning to invest further in the facility.

During a call with analysts discussing the company’s results, Chief Financial Officer Matt Osborne revealed plans to expand capacity in Ireland. Osborne highlighted the need for additional capacity to support demand from major retailers Tesco and Dunnes.
