Ardee News and Sport – Louth Volunteer Centre recently collaborated with the Louth Community Volunteers to transform a cherished garden space at Oliver Plunkett’s GAA Club in Drogheda. Over several weeks, five Community Volunteers, representing various nationalities, dedicated their time to clearing, digging, planting, and painting, breathing new life into the space. The result is a tranquil garden where visitors can rest and reflect.

Emma from Migrant Support at Louth Volunteer Centre, who spearheaded the project, shared, “There were laughs and language exchanges, with English, Arabic, and Irish phrases being shared in the rain. Three of the volunteers have since moved on, having lived temporarily at the D Hotel accommodation centre while contributing to this project. Their enthusiasm and sense of community were invaluable, and we know they’re already planning to volunteer in Mayo where they’ve been relocated.”

The project was further supported by local contributors. Dermot from Woodstyle Furniture on George’s Street and the talented members of Drogheda Men’s Sheds provided two handcrafted benches. One of the benches is inscribed in memory of the late Tomás Ó hEochaidh, a devoted clubman, former Chairman, and Honorary President of Oliver Plunkett’s. Tomás, who passed away in 2023, envisioned this garden as a space to honour both deceased and living club members. Named “I ndíl Chuimhne” (In Memory), the garden now serves as a haven for people to gather, chat, and share a cup of tea.

Gerry Murtagh, Vice Chairman of Oliver Plunkett’s, expressed his gratitude, stating, “The volunteers’ work revitalised this area, which stands as a tribute to past members and a reminder of their dedication and love for the club.”

The garden also showcases artistic contributions. The club is working with a community muralist to add a stunning mural as a finishing touch. Additionally, the local CúChulainn Girl Guides decorated stones with inspirational messages in both English and Irish for the garden, earning their Community Action badges in the process.

Jessica Woods, Leader of CúChulainn Girl Guides Drogheda, remarked, “Our unit was thrilled to participate. Painting the rocks gave the Guides insight into the importance of Memorial Gardens and how they provide comfort to those grieving. This project perfectly aligned with our mission to make a meaningful difference in the community.”

Louth Volunteer Centre continues to strengthen the county through inclusive volunteer opportunities, connecting individuals eager to contribute with organizations in need of support. From training to project assistance, the centre fosters social capital and community connectedness.
