The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) has issued an urgent appeal for blood donors, warning that stocks of O-negative and AB-negative blood types have dropped to critically low levels — with only two days’ supply remaining.
The IBTS is calling on eligible donors, particularly those with these rare and vital blood types, to come forward immediately. They stress that every donation can make a life-saving difference for patients in need of emergency transfusions, surgeries, and ongoing treatments.
A donation clinic will take place today (Thursday) at the Gateway Hotel, Dundalk, from 4pm to 8pm. In addition, the IBTS has scheduled two extra clinics next month to boost supply:
- Duleek National School – Monday, September 1, from 5pm to 9pm
- Ardee Parish Centre – Tuesday, September 2, from 3.45pm to 8pm
O-negative blood, often called the “universal donor” type, is especially vital in emergencies, while AB-negative is the rarest blood type and crucial for specific patients.
Anyone willing to donate is urged to visit giveblood.ie or call 1800 222 111 for more information on eligibility and clinic locations.
“Every drop counts,” the IBTS emphasised, “and your donation could save a life.”
