Irish Junior Doctors Overworked Amid Recruitment Freeze, Warns IMO

Irish Junior Doctors
Armstrong and Treacy Shine with a commendable sixth overall.

IMO Sounds Alarm as 80% of Irish Junior Doctors Work Over 48 Hours Weekly. The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) has issued a stark warning about the excessive workloads of junior doctors, also known as non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs). Due to an ongoing recruitment freeze, these doctors are being forced to work extra hours and shifts on short notice. A recent survey shows that eight in ten junior doctors in Ireland are regularly working more than 48 hours a week, in violation of the European working time directive. The IMO highlights that this pressure is creating a “dismal working environment” and calls for systemic change to prevent the loss of another generation of doctors to countries offering better work-life balance and respect for their contributions.
