Louth Households to Benefit from Significant Energy Price Cuts Starting Today

Thousands of households in County Louth will see a reduction in their gas and electricity bills as SSE Airtricity, one of Ireland’s largest electricity providers, cuts its prices by 10 percent. This price drop, effective from July 1, will save the average SSE customer approximately €150 annually on electricity and over €100 on gas.

This is the third price decrease by SSE Airtricity in less than a year, resulting in a cumulative 30 percent reduction since the peak of the energy crisis two years ago. The price cut, driven by declining wholesale gas and electricity prices, will benefit around a quarter of a million electricity customers and 90,000 gas customers. Other major suppliers are expected to follow suit with similar reductions by the end of the summer.

“It’s good to see energy prices continue to creep back towards more manageable levels,” said Darragh Cassidy, Head of Communications at Bonkers. Despite the reductions, current prices remain significantly higher than pre-crisis levels, with electricity prices about 70 percent higher and gas prices around 80 percent higher. Households will still be paying approximately €1,000 more annually compared to a few years ago, making energy costs a continuing concern.

Although SSE’s competitors have yet to fully respond, it is anticipated that companies like Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis Energy, and Energia will introduce comparable price cuts in the coming weeks. Additionally, new customers can find attractive deals and discounts in the current market.
