Major Blaze Devastates Long-Established Kart Racing Centre in Newry
Firefighters Battle Overnight Blaze in Newry , Gutting Long-Standing Businesses
Firefighters worked through the night to combat a significant blaze near Newry city centre, devastating several long-established businesses. The fire, which started at a kart racing centre in Greenbank industrial estate, quickly spread to two other units, including House of Murphy, a furniture showroom celebrating 50 years in business.
About 50 crew members and local farmers using slurry tanks assisted in tackling the fire. A senior Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) commander praised their invaluable support in providing water and machinery.
Owners of the furniture shop expressed shock at the extensive damage. The NIFRS continues its efforts to fully extinguish the blaze, though resources have been scaled back. Residents were initially advised to keep windows and doors closed, but roads around the estate have now reopened.
