Major Transformation Planned for Former Dunnes Building in Dundalk

Plans are in motion to transform the former Dunnes Stores building on Park Street in Dundalk into a vibrant sports entertainment venue, complete with an outdoor seating area, to embrace the growing trend of “competitive socialising.”

GR8 Entertainment Ltd has posted a site notice indicating their intent to apply for planning permission to convert the retail unit into a sports entertainment space. The proposal includes outdoor seating, new signage on Park Street and River Lane, and various building modifications.

Dundalk BIDS has been actively involved in reviving the site, aiming to boost commercial activity in the area. Martin McElligott, Town Centre Commercial Manager, highlighted the significant efforts by Dundalk BIDS and stakeholders to resolve the site’s longstanding vacancy since Dunnes relocated to the Marshes shopping centre in 2009.

McElligott expressed optimism about the project’s potential to rejuvenate Park Street, emphasizing the street’s diverse offerings and nighttime economy. He acknowledged the contributions of Michael Gunne from REA Gunne, a key figure in securing a long-term tenancy for the site.

Michael Gunne explained the concept of “competitive socialising,” noting its historical roots and recent resurgence. He cited examples like Swingers (crazy golf), Flight Club (darts), and F1 Arcade (racing simulators) as part of this trend, which combines simple games with a lively atmosphere of music, food, and drink, appealing to millennial and Gen Z customers.
