Michael Dunlop Becomes Most Successful Rider in Isle of Man TT History

Michael Dunlop has made history by becoming the most successful rider ever at the Isle of Man TT, claiming his record 27th victory in today’s Supertwins race.

The Northern Irishman secured his historic win on his Paton machine, surpassing his legendary uncle Joey Dunlop’s long-standing record. At 35 years old, Michael Dunlop achieved this milestone with a dominant performance, leading the Supertwins race from start to finish and ultimately winning by a 20.4-second margin over Peter Hickman, with Dominic Herbertson finishing third.

Dunlop had previously equalled his uncle’s record of 26 victories by winning Saturday’s Supersport opener. He narrowly missed another win in Sunday’s Superbike race due to an issue with his visor. His remarkable career spans 15 years, during which he has won in four different classes on machines from six different manufacturers.

In the Supertwins race, Dunlop’s first lap speed of 121.044mph gave him a 10-second lead. By the end of the second lap, his lead had increased to 12 seconds, and he extended it further on the final lap with a speed of 122.434mph.

With this victory, Dunlop now has four Supertwins titles, having previously won in 2018, 2019, and 2023. Reflecting on his achievement, Dunlop paid tribute to his uncle Joey, saying, “Everyone’s inspiration was to be a Joey Dunlop around the Isle of Man. I’m no better than Joey, never was. Joey’s record stood for 24 years and it’s an honour. Joey was a special talent.”

Despite the historic significance of his accomplishment, Michael remains humble. “My record will be beaten one day but I don’t care,” he remarked.

Dunlop also revealed that he had to overcome some early setbacks to secure his win. “We had an issue in first practice and were struggling a wee bit but the boys worked hard on it and the bike was mint. We had to push on as I knew we would.”

This victory cements Michael Dunlop’s legacy in the annals of Isle of Man TT history, continuing the storied tradition of his family’s racing excellence.
