In a night of electrifying boxing action, Monaghan’s Stevie McKenna solidified his rising star status with a spectacular victory over Joe Laws, clinching the WBC International Silver Super Welterweight Title in what has been described as the mental fight of the year.

The bout, held at Barnsley FC’s Oakwell Stadium, was a relentless showcase of power and resilience from both fighters. McKenna, known as “The Hitman,” came out swinging from the very first bell, delivering a thunderous right hand that sent Laws to the canvas early in the opening round. Despite being visibly shaken, Laws retaliated with a fierce left hook that floored McKenna, making for an unforgettable round of high-octane action.

With the crowd of 7,000 on their feet, the fight continued in the same frenetic pace through the second round, with both men showing their grit and determination. McKenna, undeterred by the knockdown, continued to apply pressure, landing a series of devastating punches that began to break Laws down.

By the third round, McKenna’s dominance was undeniable. Laws, clearly exhausted and outmatched, was knocked down three times. The final blow came as McKenna’s relentless barrage forced Laws’ corner to throw in the towel, ending the bout in dramatic fashion.

Reflecting on the fight, McKenna was upbeat and appreciative: “What else more would you expect from ‘The Hitman’? It was all out action from the bell, a real throwback fight. Fair play to Laws, he’s a tough guy. He caught me off guard a wee bit in the first round. I was going for it a wee bit too much but a great fight for me and what an entertaining fight for the fans.”

With his record now standing at a perfect 15-0, including 14 knockouts, McKenna’s victory not only earned him his first professional title but also positioned him as a formidable contender in the super welterweight division. He hinted at his eagerness to get back in the ring before the year’s end, with a particular interest in facing Conor Benn as he continues his ascent through the rankings.

The win follows a strong family performance in recent weeks, with McKenna’s younger brother, Aaron, also shining with a stoppage victory in Japan and advancing in Matchroom’s Prizefighter tournament. Additionally, on the same card, Derry’s Connor Coyle extended his unbeaten record to 21-0 with a hard-fought win over Kyle Lomotey, setting the stage for his own potential world title clash.

McKenna’s thrilling performance has certainly captured the attention of boxing fans and set the stage for an exciting year ahead in the sport.ntinue his unbeaten streak and add another knockout to his impressive record.
