Ardee News and Sport – Moorehall Lodge Praised for High Standards in HIQA Inspection
Moorehall Lodge Ardee has been commended for its dedication to high-quality care and the reduction of restrictive practices following an unannounced inspection by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). The inspection, which took place on December 2, 2024, assessed the nursing home’s compliance with national standards for residential care settings for older people in Ireland.
Moorehall Lodge Residents Enjoy High Quality of Life
The HIQA report highlights that residents at Moorehall Lodge Ardee experience a high standard of living, with a strong emphasis on personal freedom and dignity. During the inspection, residents expressed their satisfaction with the level of care they receive, stating that their rights are respected and that they have freedom of movement.
The nursing home has made significant strides in reducing restrictive practices, with only one resident currently using bedrails. Instead, alternative safety measures such as sensor mats have become the preferred option. Residents are free to leave the premises as long as they inform staff of their plans, with staff actively facilitating outings, social activities, and events such as Christmas shopping trips. Secure internal courtyards provide a safe and welcoming environment for both residents and visitors at all times.
Welcoming Atmosphere and Strong Community Engagement
Visitors are welcomed without restrictions at Moorehall Lodge Ardee, with controlled entry via a front doorbell and a sign-in system at reception. Residents enjoy full privacy within their rooms, which they are encouraged to personalise with their own belongings. Lockable storage is provided in each room to ensure the security of valuables.
A wide range of activities keeps residents engaged and socially active. Regular visits from local community groups, including the Legion of Mary and school children, contribute to a lively and inclusive atmosphere. Additional activities such as live music performances, exercise classes, and dog therapy sessions are held frequently, while religious services remain accessible both in-house and through live-streamed broadcasts.
Commitment to Best Practices and Staff Training
The centre’s management team has implemented a self-assessment process to monitor and further reduce restrictive practices. A dedicated restrictive practice committee meets monthly to review policies and ensure that any necessary measures are the least restrictive options available. A comprehensive restraint policy is in place, ensuring that all practices remain proportionate and necessary.
Regular audits and quality improvement plans have been established to track and reassess any restrictive practices in use. Staff training has also been a priority, with employees receiving education on human rights, advocacy, and assisted decision-making. This ensures that staff members fully understand the impact of restrictive practices and can provide residents with the highest level of autonomy and support.
HIQA’s Findings and Compliance
HIQA’s overall assessment found Moorehall Lodge Ardee to be fully compliant with national standards, particularly in the areas of person-centred care, safety, and governance. Residents are well-informed of their rights and have access to clear complaints procedures and advocacy services. Many residents confirmed that they feel supported in their daily choices, including the ability to vote, attend religious services, and maintain personal relationships.
The positive findings in this report reflect Moorehall Lodge Ardee’s commitment to maintaining an exceptional standard of care, ensuring that residents continue to live fulfilling and independent lives within a safe and supportive environment.
