MOTORCYCLE RACING NEWS & UPDATES

Andrew Irwin edged out his brother Glenn to secure the final podium position in the first race of the weekend at the British Superbike round at Brands Hatch on Saturday. Ryan Vickers claimed a convincing victory on his OMG Yamaha, finishing 7.33 seconds ahead of runner-up Tommy Bridewell.

This win marked Vickers’ first race victory since his double win at the opening round in Navarra, Spain, in April. After Danny Kent crashed out of second place, defending champion Bridewell and PBM Ducati rider Glenn Irwin seemed poised to battle for second and third. However, Andrew Irwin had other plans, progressing from 11th place to overtake his brother and secure third, finishing behind his Honda Racing teammate for his second podium of the season.

Christian Iddon and Kyle Ryde completed the top six, while Richard Kerr from Donegal finished 19th, making his debut for the Cheshire Mouldings BMW team as a substitute for the injured Rory Skinner.

Glenn Irwin and Bridewell are tied at the top of the championship standings with 189 points each, ahead of Saturday’s sprint race and the second feature race at the Kent circuit. Last season, Bridewell narrowly won the BSB crown over his then PBM Ducati teammate by just half a point.

In the Supersport race, Dubliner Jack Kennedy secured victory, beating Ben Currie by 0.015 seconds. Luke Stapleford took third, and Alastair Seeley from Carrickfergus finished fourth. Lee Johnston from Fermanagh, returning after a lengthy injury, finished 18th on his Ashcourt Racing Triumph.

Turkish rider Toprak Razgatlioglu clinched his 10th straight victory in this year’s World Superbike Championship, winning both the Superpole and Race Two in the Czech Republic, extending his series lead to 64 points.

Razgatlioglu, after initially dropping to third in the morning Superpole race, took the lead by lap four, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of Nicolo Bulega, with Great Britain’s Alex Lowes securing third on his Kawasaki. Ducati’s defending champion Alvaro Bautista crashed out on the final lap while battling for second with teammate Bulega. Bautista faced further misfortune in Race Two, being taken out on the first corner after a collision with Danilo Petrucci, forcing Andrea Iannone to take evasive action.

In Race Two, Razgatlioglu quickly took the lead from Bulega and finished 3.329 seconds ahead, achieving his third successive weekend treble. Bulega finished 5.462 seconds ahead of Andrea Locatelli, who narrowly beat Australian Remy Gardner for the final podium spot. Northern Ireland’s six-time champion Jonathan Rea improved from 13th to finish sixth in Race Two, his second-best main race finish of the campaign.

Rea improved his championship position to 10th but remains 228 points behind leader Razgatlioglu. The Turkish rider, now with 51 World Superbike race wins, enters the championship’s three-week summer break with a 64-point lead over Bulega, while Bautista’s hopes of retaining the title look slim with a 104-point deficit.

After securing a podium in the Superpole race, Lowes received two long-lap penalties for jumping the start in Race Two but recovered to finish ninth. He remains fourth in the championship, 124 points behind Razgatlioglu. Razgatlioglu won Saturday’s Race One, ahead of Italian riders Petrucci and Iannone, with Bautista and Bulega finishing fourth and sixth respectively, and Rea in 10th.
