Multiple Sanctions Imposed on Fans After Dundalk v Drogheda Clash

Multiple Sanctions

Following the Lilywhites’ 4-2 victory over Drogheda United in the League of Ireland Premier Division at Oriel Park, an altercation between fans led to multiple sanctions being issued. Trouble erupted in front of ‘The Shed’, leaving Drogheda five points behind Dundalk at the bottom of the table.

Drogheda United have identified and sanctioned several supporters involved in the incident, issuing bans ranging from indefinite to season-long suspensions. A club spokesperson stated: “We apologize to everyone who had to witness the unsavoury behavior at the end of Friday’s match. Having identified those involved through footage from fans, TV crews, and sports journalists, we have issued varying degrees of sanctions.”

The spokesperson emphasized the club’s zero-tolerance policy towards violent behavior: “There is no place for such conduct at Drogheda United FC. We are committed to eradicating this behavior and ensuring it does not recur.”

A meeting was held with Dundalk FC, the FAI, and An Garda Síochána to address the incident and prevent future occurrences. Both clubs are united in their efforts to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere and enhance the positive momentum around the League.

An increased security plan will be in place for the upcoming FAI Cup clash at Weavers Park. “We want to reassure fans that we are focused on providing a safe, enjoyable environment and returning the focus to the football,” the spokesperson added. “Louth Derbies are pivotal fixtures, and we aim to restore the passion and enjoyment this Friday.”

The FAI Disciplinary Committee will meet tomorrow to review the incident, but the Cup game is currently set to proceed with fans in attendance.
