North East Road Safety Initiative Sees Early Morning Success

North East Road Safety Initiative Sees Early Morning Success

The North East’s road safety campaign, “ Operation Guide ,” has been hailed as a success, with dozens of motorists stopped this week by the Garda Roads Policing Unit in Dundalk. This initiative involves random early morning checks targeting various road safety violations.

Members of the Roads Policing Unit have been conducting random checks on major routes, including the M1 and N2, focusing on offenses such as speeding, mobile phone use, drink and drug driving, and the non-wearing of seatbelts. Additionally, they have been identifying disqualified drivers violating court orders.

Sgt. Declan Higgins of the Dundalk Roads Policing Unit elaborates on the operation’s objectives:

“We’ve commenced weekly operations, varying our approaches to maintain high visibility on the roads. This week, we initiated early morning operations starting at 4 a.m., targeting main routes towards Dublin, specifically the M1 and N2 in County Louth.

Our efforts include marked patrol cars to address speeding and other critical offenses like mobile phone use and seatbelt compliance. The operation has received positive feedback and has been deemed successful so far.

Moving forward, we plan to continue with weekly random operations, focusing on disqualified drivers and other lifesaving offenses, particularly in major urban areas of County Louth. These actions will take place at various times, including night, weekends, early mornings, and daytime.

Our goal is to increase road visibility and engage with drivers to reduce road fatalities. The current situation with road deaths is dire, and we are committed to doing everything in our power to mitigate these tragedies.”

The proactive measures of “Operation Guide” are part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and reduce accidents in the region.
