Over 900 Speeding Tickets Issued During Bank Holiday Road Safety Operation; 115 Road Deaths Reported This Year

As the bank holiday weekend drew to a close, the Gardaí’s intensive road safety operation revealed troubling statistics. Since the operation commenced on Thursday morning, a staggering 946 drivers have been caught speeding across the country. In just the past 24 hours alone, 160 motorists were detected violating speed limits.

With Over 900 Speeding Tickets issued one particularly alarming case involved a driver clocked at 105km/h in a 50kph zone along Seapoint Promenade in Co. Galway. Another motorist was apprehended speeding at 97kph in a 60kph zone on North Road, Drogheda.

Additionally, a driver on the South Ring Road in Co. Cork was recorded at 134kph in a 100kph zone, while a motorist on the M7 in Ladytown, Naas, Co. Kildare, was detected traveling at 147kph in a 120kph zone.

The operation also resulted in 127 arrests for driving under the influence of intoxicants, with 46 of these made in the past 24 hours.

Inspector Peter Gilsenan highlighted the concerning trend of dangerous driving behaviors, despite the heightened enforcement. “While we have seen generally good levels of compliance at Garda checkpoints, we continue to detect unacceptable speeds and extreme driving behaviors such as drug and drink driving,” he said.

The grim tally for road fatalities this year now stands at 115, marking a 12-person increase compared to 2023. Tragically, two additional fatalities have been reported since the beginning of the operation.

Inspector Gilsenan’s message remains clear: “For the safety of yourselves and all road users, please slow down and drive safely. Do not use your phone while driving and never drive under the influence of an intoxicant.”
