Peter Fitzpatrick, the Independent TD for Louth, has announced that he will not contest the next general election, bringing an end to his political career in Dáil Éireann. Fitzpatrick, who was first elected as a Fine Gael TD in 2011 before leaving the party in 2018, made the announcement through a statement to LMFM, citing a mix of emotions and deep reflection behind his decision.

“It is with a mix of emotions, a deep sense of responsibility and reflection that I announce that I will not contest the next general election,” Fitzpatrick stated. “I am very proud to have gained election to Dáil Éireann on three separate occasions, including doing the seemingly impossible and being voted in as an Independent. This milestone was both challenging and rewarding and was a collective effort supported by an incredible network of individuals.”

Fitzpatrick’s political journey began with Fine Gael, but his departure from the party in 2018 was driven by a strong opposition to the repeal of the Eighth Amendment, which legalized abortion in Ireland. He expressed pride in his efforts to create a more compassionate Ireland, highlighting his staunch opposition to the legalization of abortion as one of his most significant campaigns.

Fitzpatrick made history as the first Independent TD to be elected in County Louth since James Coburn in 1932, who later joined Fine Gael. Reflecting on his time in the Dáil, the Dundalk-based TD expressed gratitude to his colleagues within the Regional Group, acknowledging their support, guidance, and shared commitment to regional issues.

“It has been an immense privilege to work alongside dedicated colleagues who share a commitment to advancing our shared goals,” Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick’s decision marks the third announcement from a Louth TD stepping back from politics, following similar declarations by Sinn Féin’s Imelda Munster and Fine Gael’s Fergus O’Dowd in recent months. With his departure, Fitzpatrick becomes the 27th TD to confirm they will not seek re-election, signaling significant changes in the political landscape for Louth and the wider region.
