Revenue Seizes €388,000 Worth of Nitrous Oxide En Route to Dundalk
In a significant operation, Revenue officers on Monday seized 10,800 nitrous oxide canisters valued at €388,800 from a warehouse in Dublin
The consignment, which originated from Germany and arrived in Ireland via Zeebrugge, Belgium, was destined for an address in Dundalk.
Although nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is widely used in the catering industry for tasks such as whipping cream, its potential misuse as a recreational drug has prompted stringent regulations. Under the Criminal Justice (Psychoactive Substances) Act 2010, Revenue has the authority to detain and seize substances believed to be imported for illicit purposes.
Revenue officers acted on reasonable grounds to believe that these nitrous oxide canisters were not intended for legitimate catering use. This seizure underscores Revenue’s ongoing efforts to combat the illicit trade and importation of psychoactive substances into Ireland.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact circumstances and potential illegal use of the seized nitrous oxide. This action forms part of Revenue’s broader strategy to safeguard public health and uphold the law.
Revenue encourages businesses and the public to report any information related to smuggling activities. Confidential reports can be made by contacting Revenue at 1800 295 295.
This decisive action by Revenue highlights the continuous fight against the illegal importation and distribution of potentially harmful substances, ensuring the safety and well-being of communities across Ireland.
