Rory McIlroy Shines at US Open with Flawless Opening Round

Rory McIlroyRory McIlroy made a stunning start at the 124th US Open at Pinehurst, sharing the lead with Patrick Cantlay after an impressive five-under-par 65.

Determined to end his major championship drought, McIlroy outperformed his playing partners, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, who shot 71 and 70 respectively.

This remarkable performance comes just days after McIlroy reconciled with his wife Erica, following a brief separation. Demonstrating excellent form, McIlroy birdied the fourth, chipped in for another on the fifth, and added further birdies on the 10th, 16th, and 18th holes. His flawless round matched his lowest opening score in the US Open.

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy said, “I went through a period where my starts at major championships weren’t very good. It’s nice to get off to a good start, and my short game was excellent early on.”

Patrick Cantlay, one of the early starters, also impressed with a six-birdie round, finishing with a five-under-par 65. Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg followed closely with a 66, marking an impressive debut in the US Open. Aberg, who turned professional only a year ago, has quickly made a name for himself with strong performances on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.

Tiger Woods, however, faced challenges, struggling to a 74 after an initial birdie. Despite recent difficulties, Woods remains optimistic about his physical recovery and future in the sport.

Bryson DeChambeau and France’s Matthieu Pavon were also in contention, each carding three-under-par rounds. Pavon made history as the first player to make multiple eagles in a US Open round at Pinehurst.

England’s Robert Rock, who returned to competitive golf after announcing his retirement in 2022, shot a level-par 70.

The competition continues, with McIlroy and Cantlay setting the pace and the rest of the field aiming to catch up in the coming rounds.
