“Scheffler Leads the Pack: 2024 US Open Preview at Pinehurst”

The third major of 2024 kicks off this week at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, hosting the 124th US Open. World number one Scottie Scheffler is the standout favorite, aiming to add another title to his impressive collection. Here, we take a look at the notable contenders for this prestigious event.

US Open Preview

Scottie Scheffler’s form is nothing short of remarkable, even more so considering he has become a father and faced legal troubles since May. Despite these challenges, he secured an eighth-place finish at the US PGA Championship, marking his second-worst performance since February. With five victories in his last eight starts, including last week’s Memorial, Scheffler is in prime condition for the US Open.

Xander Schauffele, fresh off his US PGA victory, is seen as Scheffler’s main competition. With seven top-10 finishes in his last nine starts, Schauffele is in excellent form. Rory McIlroy is also a strong contender, boasting a win at Wells Fargo and three consecutive top-15 finishes.

Jon Rahm, a former US Open champion, unfortunately, will miss the event due to a toe infection sustained during a LIV Golf event in Houston. Defending champion Wyndham Clark enters the tournament on the back of two missed cuts, while Ludvig Aberg is well-supported after a fifth-place finish at the Memorial.

Rickie Fowler, who tied for second place when the US Open was last held at Pinehurst 10 years ago, will look to leverage his course experience. Other seasoned players like Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, and Keegan Bradley also hope to benefit from their familiarity with the course.

Course Guide

In his pre-tournament press conference, Tiger Woods emphasized that Pinehurst No.2 will test every aspect of a golfer’s game, particularly around the greens with their challenging run-off areas. The course measures 7,550 yards, featuring two par-fives and par-threes all exceeding 184 yards. The last US Open at Pinehurst saw Martin Kaymer win by an eight-shot margin, with only three players finishing better than one-over-par.

Prediction: Scottie Scheffler

Given his current form, it’s hard to look past Scottie Scheffler as the favorite. While he has yet to secure a major win outside the Masters, his consistent performance suggests it’s only a matter of time. The demanding Pinehurst course will require mental fortitude, and Scheffler’s reliability in hitting fairways and greens positions him as the man to beat. Expect challenges from Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland, but Scheffler’s steadiness should see him prevail.
