Ardee News and Sport – Speed Limit Reduction on Rural Louth Roads Begins Today – Drivers Urged to Take Extra Care
From today, Friday, 7th February, speed limits on local roads across County Louth will be reduced from the current default of 80km/h to 60km/h.
These changes affect roads designated with an “L” followed by four or five numbers on maps and road signs. These are typically narrower, rural roads, such as all the L roads branching off the main Ardee–Dundalk Road (N52) and Ardee to Drogheda Road (N2).
Louth County Council has been actively installing new speed limit signs in preparation for the change. The familiar rural speed limit sign will now indicate a maximum speed of 60km/h rather than 80km/h.
Motorists are advised to be extra cautious, as cars equipped with automatic speed recognition may not yet detect the new 60km/h limit correctly. Drivers should remain attentive and adjust their speed accordingly to ensure road safety.
Government Officials Emphasize Life-Saving Benefits
Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, highlighted the importance of the reduction, stating:
“Today’s speed limit reduction will save lives, because driving slower saves lives. If a collision occurs at a lower speed, the chances of serious injury or death are significantly reduced. Slower driving also reduces the risk of collisions happening in the first place. Road fatalities and serious injuries are not inevitable—they are preventable through sensible, evidence-based measures.”
Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Seán Canney, reinforced this message, saying:
“This speed limit change is the result of years of consultation, backed by the findings of the 2023 Speed Limit Review and close cooperation with local authorities. Safer roads benefit everyone, and while enforcement plays a key role, responsible driving and looking out for one another on rural roads are equally important. By adhering to these limits, we can help reverse the worrying trend of increasing road fatalities.”
Drivers are urged to stay alert, particularly as vehicles with automatic speed recognition may not immediately register the new 60km/h limit.
