County Louth is bracing for a fierce double blast of severe weather tonight as Storm Lilian approaches, bringing heavy rain and gale-force winds. Met Éireann has issued multiple weather warnings, highlighting the challenging conditions expected across the country.

Following yesterday’s remnants of ex-Hurricane Ernesto, which already delivered heavy rain and strong winds, Storm Lilian, a powerful Atlantic system named by the UK’s Met Office, is set to sweep across Ireland tonight.

After a brief reprieve this morning, rain is expected to return from the southwest this afternoon, spreading quickly across the country. The rain will become increasingly heavy, raising concerns about flooding in some areas. As the night progresses, strong winds, reaching gale-force in parts of the south and east, will make conditions even more challenging. Temperatures are also predicted to drop below seasonal averages.

Met Éireann has issued two Status Yellow weather warnings in anticipation of the storm. A rain warning has been issued for Louth, as well as Clare, Galway, Roscommon, Longford, Meath, Offaly, and Westmeath, from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. The warning cautions of “heavy rain spreading northeastwards,” with the potential for localised flooding and difficult travel conditions.

Additionally, a wind warning is in place for several southern and eastern counties, including Dublin, from midnight until 6 a.m. This warning highlights “unseasonably strong and gusty south to southwest winds veering west to northwest,” with a risk of coastal flooding due to high tides. The public is advised to prepare for potential power outages, fallen trees, and other hazards.

Although the worst of Storm Lilian is expected to impact the counties under warning, the entire country is forecast to experience rain and wind throughout the night.

Today’s nationwide forecast from Met Éireann predicts sunny spells and scattered showers in the morning, with rain returning this afternoon and spreading across the country by evening. Temperatures will range from 15°C to 18°C, with winds picking up strength as the day progresses.

Tonight, the heavy rain is expected to lead to spot flooding, particularly in the south and east, where the winds will be strongest. As the rain clears northeastwards, temperatures will drop to between 9°C and 12°C.

Looking ahead to the weekend, unsettled weather is set to continue, although Saturday is expected to offer a brief respite.

Residents in County Louth and beyond are urged to stay informed and take precautions as Storm Lilian moves in.
