Tributes Pour In for Young Crossmaglen Rangers Star Caolan Finnegan, Who Passes Away at 20 After Cancer Battle
The community of Crossmaglen and the wider GAA family is in mourning following the tragic passing of 20-year-old Caolan Finnegan, a beloved member of the Crossmaglen Rangers GAA club. Affectionately known as “Stringer,” Caolan passed away early Friday morning after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Caolan was diagnosed nearly a year ago, but his fight against the disease was marked by immense bravery and determination. As recently as last year, he was an integral part of the Crossmaglen Rangers team, playing in the Championship opener against Clan na Gael. His presence on the field and his contributions to the club have left an indelible mark on those who knew him.
In a heartfelt statement shared on their social media channels, Crossmaglen Rangers confirmed the devastating news and announced that all club activities would be suspended until further notice. The club expressed their pride and admiration for Caolan, describing him as “one of the greatest who ever donned the black and amber.”
“Caolan lost his battle earlier this morning. A battle he fought with enormous courage, strength, and dignity. We are so proud of you, Caolan. A true Ranger. You will be forever remembered as one of the greatest who ever donned the black & amber. Forever in our hearts. Rest in peace, Stringer. All club activities are suspended. #15,” the statement read.
In a touching tribute during last weekend’s rematch against Clan na Gael at Davitt Park, Crossmaglen players wore bibs emblazoned with Caolan’s number 15 and the words “Care for Caolan” as a show of support. The fundraising initiative, which bore the same name, had enabled Caolan to travel to Germany for specialised treatment, with over €350,000 raised by the community and supporters.
At the Armagh press conference following their All-Ireland final victory over Galway, Caolan’s cousin, Oisin O’Neill, wore a t-shirt promoting the “Care for Caolan” campaign. Armagh manager Kieran McGeeney also paid tribute, noting that Caolan would have been part of the Orchard squad this season if not for his illness.
The impact of Caolan’s passing is deeply felt throughout the community, with many taking to social media to share their memories and condolences. The defending Armagh SFC champions, Crossmaglen Rangers, were scheduled to face Sarsfield’s on Sunday, and their seconds were set to play Keady in the Intermediate Championship. Both matches have been postponed in light of the tragedy.
Caolan Finnegan’s legacy as a talented and cherished member of the Crossmaglen Rangers will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His strength, both on and off the field, will be remembered by all. Rest in peace, Stringer.
