Tusla Review into Disappearance of 8-Year-Old Dundalk Boy Kyran Durnin Will Not Be Made Public
Ardee News and Sport – A report from Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, regarding the tragic disappearance of 8-year-old Kyran Durnin from Dundalk, Co. Louth, will not be made public, the agency confirmed this week. Kyran, who went missing two years ago, is now the subject of a murder investigation launched by Gardaí, with recent searches conducted in Dundalk but yielding no public updates. Tusla’s review of the case is expected to be shared with Minister for Children Roderic O’Gorman soon, potentially as early as Friday.
Tusla explained in a Thursday statement that withholding the report’s release is standard practice, especially given the sensitive nature of the case and the ongoing Garda investigation. “In accordance with standard practice in sensitive situations, and in the context of the live investigation by An Garda Síochána and the highly sensitive nature of the personal information involved, the review cannot be published at this time,” a Tusla spokesperson stated.
Education Minister Norma Foley is also set to receive a separate report regarding information held by Tusla’s Education Support Service. Minister Foley commented on the troubling case earlier this week, acknowledging systemic failures that led to Kyran’s case going unnoticed, saying, “This should never have happened.”
She added, “Our core belief in education – and I would like to think in Irish society – is that we protect, we mind and we guide children right throughout their lives.”
Following Kyran’s disappearance, Gardaí carried out searches last week at the former Durnin family residence and surrounding land in Dundalk. Although the results remain undisclosed for operational reasons, authorities suspect the boy may have been killed approximately two years ago, when he was just six. Tusla had previously flagged a serious concern regarding Kyran in August, alerting Gardaí to his possible disappearance.
The investigation into Kyran’s fate is ongoing as Gardaí and government officials work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding his case.
