Over €200,000 Worth of Cannabis Seized in Major Operation
Gardaí have uncovered a sophisticated cannabis growhouse in Dunleer, County Louth, seizing an estimated €233,000 worth of drugs in a major crackdown on drug trafficking networks.
The operation, carried out yesterday afternoon by the Divisional Drug Unit at Drogheda Garda Station, led to the discovery of a large-scale cannabis cultivation site. Two men, aged in their 30s and 50s, were arrested at the scene and are currently being questioned under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drugs Trafficking) Act 1996 at a Garda station in the North Western Region.
Cannabis Cultivation Site Discovered
According to a Garda spokesperson, officers executed a search warrant at a property in Dunleer as part of an ongoing investigation into organised crime and drug trafficking under Operation Tara.
“During the search, Gardaí discovered a sophisticated cannabis cultivation operation. A total of 60 cannabis plants at various stages of growth were seized, with an estimated street value of €48,000. In addition, cannabis herb with an estimated value of €185,000 was also recovered,” the spokesperson confirmed.
Ongoing Garda Crackdown on Drug Crime
The raid forms part of Operation Tara, a national Garda strategy focused on dismantling drug trafficking networks and tackling organised crime.
“This operation is part of our ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply of illegal drugs and combat criminal activity in the region,” the spokesperson added.
All seized items have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for further analysis, while investigations into the growhouse and those responsible for its operation are ongoing.
The two arrested men remain in Garda custody, and further charges may follow as detectives continue their inquiries.
