Wolfe Tones Claim Historic Louth JFC Title, Ending 87-Year Drought with Victory Over John Mitchels
Ardee News and Sport – Wolfe Tones are celebrating a long-awaited triumph tonight after capturing the Louth Junior Football Championship (JFC) title with a 2-10 to 2-2 victory over John Mitchels. The game, played in tough wet and windy conditions in Dunleer, marks the Drogheda club’s first championship win since 1937, closing an 87-year wait.
Despite the challenging weather, the match saw moments of high drama. John Mitchels’ John Gallagher sparked early hope with a stunning long-range goal just before the 15-minute mark. However, Wolfe Tones quickly responded as Sam Kelly found the back of the net, setting up a powerful first-half surge. With Kelly and Eoghan Brennan adding points, Wolfe Tones led comfortably at halftime, 1-4 to 0-1.
As the second half began, both sides traded points, but Wolfe Tones soon broke away. A standout moment came when Eoghan Brennan capitalized on a misjudgment by the Mitchels’ keeper, scoring a second goal that effectively sealed the game. Though Gallagher netted a late goal for Mitchels, Brennan added a final point to ensure the Tones’ historic victory.
The win solidifies Wolfe Tones’ return to prominence and brings a fitting conclusion to a memorable championship campaign.
