Work begins in Ardee to reduce leaks and safeguard water supply
By ArdeePost Reporter
Uisce Éireann has announced that major works will begin next week in Ardee as part of its national Leakage Reduction Programme, designed to improve Ireland’s water network and secure supply for homes, businesses, and communities.
The project will see the replacement of 670 metres of ageing water mains along John Street, Ardee, and the N2 Drogheda Road, a move expected to bring lasting benefits to the town by tackling persistent leaks and reducing the risk of bursts and water outages.
According to Uisce Éireann, the upgrade will not only provide a more reliable and resilient water supply but also deliver long-term cost savings by improving overall network efficiency and cutting down on future maintenance needs.
Declan Healy of Uisce Éireann said the works are vital for Ardee’s future:
“This section of the network has burst frequently over the last year, which has significantly impacted residents and businesses on John Street. Repair works required extensive traffic management and caused prolonged supply interruptions. By replacing these ageing mains, we’re addressing immediate leakage problems and preparing the network to meet the demands of future growth.”
Mr Healy acknowledged that while lane closures and traffic management will be necessary, disruption will be kept to a minimum and access to businesses and homes will remain open.
“We understand that traffic management can be inconvenient, but the long-term benefits will outweigh the short-term disruption. We thank the community in advance for their patience and support as we deliver this vital project.”
The works, being delivered by GMC Utilities Group on behalf of Uisce Éireann, will run from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, along John Street. Meanwhile, works on the N2 Drogheda Road will take place at night from 7pm to 7am to reduce traffic impact.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2026.
Since the launch of the Leakage Reduction Programme in 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million nationally and has committed to investing an additional €250 million each year until 2030 to enhance water services across Ireland.
This latest investment in Ardee represents a crucial step in strengthening the town’s infrastructure, ensuring its residents and businesses enjoy secure and sustainable water services well into the future.
