€7m for Drogheda’s Westgate Vision hailed as game-changer

By ArdeePost Reporter

Drogheda has received a major boost with the announcement that €7 million in funding has been secured for the Westgate Vision urban regeneration project, marking a milestone moment for the town’s future. The funding, confirmed by Fianna Fáil Senator Alison Comyn, comes under the THRIVE (Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme).

Despite forecasts of rain, the morning sunshine set the tone for a memorable day on the fairways. Though a few showerThe project, first launched by Louth County Council in 2018, will now move forward with the resources needed to transform the heart of Ireland’s largest town.

Senator Comyn, who has long championed the Westgate Vision both in her career as a journalist and since entering the Seanad, described the funding as “transformational investment” for Drogheda.

“This is a massive day for Drogheda,” she said. “Securing €7 million for the Westgate Vision is the result of years of hard work, community effort, and belief in the future of our town. I couldn’t be prouder to see Drogheda finally get the recognition and investment it deserves.”

The funding will support the renovation and adaptive reuse of vacant or derelict heritage buildings in public ownership, and will bring long-term benefits for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Four key areas of transformation

The Westgate Vision will deliver regeneration across four heritage-rich sites:

  • Westgate Area: A striking new gateway to the medieval walled town, with improved links between George’s Street and the River Boyne.
  • Old Abbey Area: Better access, an event space, and sensitive restoration of historic features.
  • Medieval Town Wall: A new curved walkway connecting Westgate to the Boyne, highlighting Drogheda’s medieval character.
  • Boyne River Front: Upgraded public spaces reconnecting the town to its river.

Senator Comyn paid tribute to Ministers James Browne, Christopher O’Sullivan, and John Cummins, who have overseen the THRIVE scheme, as well as to former Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien for his early backing.

“This is more than bricks and mortar,” Comyn added. “It’s about restoring pride, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for future generations.”

A long campaign rewarded

Since her election in 2024, Senator Comyn has made heritage-led regeneration one of her top priorities, raising Drogheda’s case at every level of government.

“As a journalist, I saw the frustration in our community when promises weren’t delivered. As a Senator, I made it my mission to change that. This funding proves what’s possible when ambition meets determination,” she said.

“This is just the beginning. Drogheda is on the up – and I’ll continue working every day to make sure we keep building on this momentum.”

The €7 million investment represents not only a commitment to Drogheda’s urban renewal, but also a bold step in preserving its heritage and identity for generations to come.
