Dundalk FC ‘Fully Cooperating’ with Authorities After Alleged Racist Remark During FAI Cup Tie Against Sligo Rovers

Dundalk FC has released a statement confirming it is “fully cooperating with all the relevant authorities” following an allegation of a racist remark made toward a Sligo Rovers player during their FAI Cup clash at Oriel Park on Friday night.

The incident reportedly occurred during the first half of the game, and it was formally acknowledged over the public address system at halftime after the match referee filed a report indicating that a racist comment had been heard.

The game itself saw Sligo Rovers advance to the next round with a 2-0 victory, courtesy of second-half goals from James McManus and Jake Doyle-Hayes. However, the alleged incident has since overshadowed the result, prompting an immediate investigation.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday morning, Dundalk FC expressed its disappointment and made clear its stance on discrimination and racism in sport.

“Dundalk FC is extremely disappointed to be made aware of an allegation of incitement to hatred towards a Sligo Rovers player during our Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup match at Oriel Park on Friday, July 18th,” the club said.

“Dundalk FC is a community-based football club. We pride ourselves on being an open and inclusive club and are proud to welcome all to Oriel Park. The club takes all reports of discrimination seriously and we are fully cooperating with all the relevant authorities on this matter.”

The club also reaffirmed its support for the League of Ireland’s zero-tolerance policy on racism and discrimination.

“We stand with the League of Ireland and our supporters in taking a zero-tolerance approach to tackling hatred within the game,” the statement continued.

Dundalk FC encouraged anyone with information or who witnessed inappropriate behaviour to report it in confidence via phone at 042 9335894 or by email to office@dundalkfc.com.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and match officials are expected to continue their inquiries in conjunction with the club, and further updates are likely in the coming days.

This incident comes amid increasing efforts by the League of Ireland and its clubs to combat racism and promote inclusion, both in the stands and on the pitch.
