Helpline opens amid Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital review
SAFE (Suicide Awareness For Everyone) Castlebellingham

By ArdeePost Reporter

A dedicated helpline is being launched this morning for patients who may be concerned that their pre-cancerous cells were incorrectly categorised at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The move comes as part of a large-scale review of histopathology work carried out by one consultant at the hospital between February and November 2024. The review involves the re-examination of over 1,000 patient slides, with more than half of those already reassessed.

Histopathology is the study of tissues taken during biopsies or surgical procedures, and is a key tool in diagnosing a wide range of conditions, including cancer. The accuracy of grading pre-cancerous cells is particularly important, as it directly impacts how patients are monitored and treated.

Review Findings So Far

  • Of the 500+ slides reviewed to date, four patients are being invited to open disclosure meetings to explain discrepancies in their original results.
  • Two patients experienced a 12-day delay in their treatment due to incorrect reporting.
  • In one case, an unnecessary biopsy was performed.
  • Two cases were linked to the re-categorisation of pre-cancerous cells. Some patients’ cells have been upgraded—requiring closer monitoring—while others have been downgraded.

Health officials have stressed that, to date, the issues identified do not involve cancer misdiagnoses but are limited to the categorisation of pre-cancerous cells.

Hospital Statement

A spokesperson for Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital confirmed that in addition to the four patients being directly contacted, “several dozen” patients will also be written to. These letters will explain that while a difference was noted between their original result and the findings of the independent review, no further action will be required in those cases.

“All doctors undergo a robust recruitment and onboarding process,” the spokesperson added, while emphasising that the review is being conducted under strict quality assurance protocols to protect patients and maintain transparency.

Patient Support Helpline

To assist those who may be worried about the ongoing review, a helpline has been set up. Patients can call 1800 66 77 00 for advice and information.

  • Monday to Friday: 9am–6pm
  • Saturday and Sunday (this weekend): 9am–2pm

Hospital officials have encouraged anyone with concerns to make contact, assuring the public that the process is designed to safeguard patient safety and rebuild trust.
