Free Hazardous Waste Collection Day Announced in Ardee

By ArdeePost Reporter

Ardee residents urged to safely dispose of household hazardous waste this October

Residents of Ardee and surrounding areas are being encouraged to take part in a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, 4 October 2025, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Kieran & McGee, Ardee Livestock Sales Yard, Drumgoolestown, Ardee, Co. Louth, A92 VP92.

The initiative is being delivered in partnership by the Regional Waste Management Planning Offices and Louth County Council, with funding from the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment.

This free service offers households a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of harmful products that may be lingering under sinks, in sheds, or garages — including leftover paint tins, strong cleaning agents, garden chemicals, and aerosol cans.

Why it Matters

Improper disposal of hazardous materials, such as pouring bleach or solvents down the drain or throwing aerosol cans into the bin, can cause significant harm. These substances may contaminate water sources, damage ecosystems, pose risks to waste facility staff, and even cause dangerous chemical reactions or fires.

“This is a positive step to ensure Louth remains environmentally conscious,” said Cllr Sean Kelly, Cathaoirleach at Louth County Council. “Please remember that only household hazardous waste will be accepted, and such materials should never be placed in your general waste bin. We encourage all residents to take advantage of this free service.”

What You Can Bring (Household Waste ONLY):

  • Household Chemicals: disinfectants, bleach, oven cleaners, toilet cleaners
  • Personal Care Products: aerosols, nail polish, nail polish remover
  • Garden Chemicals: pesticides, herbicides
  • Paints & Related Items: leftover paints, brushes, rollers
  • Solvents: varnishes, thinners, glues, resins, inks
  • Automotive Products: used motor oil (up to 25L), antifreeze, petrol, polish

Important Restrictions:

  • Household items only — no commercial or farm waste
  • Medicines, medical waste, WEEE, and gas canisters not accepted
  • 10-can/tub limit for paint per customer
  • Materials will only be accepted during the official hours

Martin O’Gorman, Technical Support Officer at the Regional Waste Management Planning Offices, stressed:

“The aim of this household hazardous waste collection initiative is to make the disposing process simple and convenient for householders to safely get rid of these harmful materials. It’s vital that hazardous products are kept out of the general waste bin and handled responsibly.”

Residents are asked to bring items in their original containers with labels intact. For a complete list of accepted materials, visit www.mywaste.ie or www.louthcoco.ie.
